Detroit teen is charged with a hate crime after mob beating of a Detroit motorist
The Detroit News reported that a 16-year old boy
was arraigned in juvenile court on Saturday and
was charged with a hate crime after the mob beating of a Detroit motorist.
Steven Utash, 54, was beaten by several men and a teenager after he got out of his truck to check on a 10 year old boy whom he, Utash, accidently hit with his truck.
Utash is white and the men and teenager are black. According to WXYZ, a retired Nurse, Deborah Hughes, stopped the mob from attacking Utash.
Hughes told WXYZ that she first attended to the 10 year old boy, and then she ran over to assist Utash after the mob surrounded him.
The police have located all individuals involved in the attack. According to the Detroit News, the teenager is charged with ethnic intimidation because of the racially insensitive language he used to describe Utash during the police interrogation.
Due to his age, the teenager is being charged as a juvenile. The Assistant Prosecutor told the Detroit News that the boy would have been charged as an adult if he were 17 years old.
